life and its unpredictability

November 21st, 2007 by gengengen

Came across the article in the morning and it made me realised how fragile one’s life can be…

When i first read this, i was overwhelmed with a lot of emotions… in recent yrs, Earth had became a place with great uncertainties. It used to take an accident, a bad turn in health or an unhealthy lifestyle to take away a life. But nowadays, the list continues with weird unknown dieseases, virus and most recently an overly active lifestyle!

the fine line between good and bad is getting blurred and disillusioned. Mr oii had left to be with the Lord… another case of a fine young man… A healthy one. Why? These recent cases make me so worried sometimes that im so tempted to conclude that 做人真难, in the past, its only about leading a careful and healthy lifestyle… not subjecting yourself to risks…. but nowadays… u even have to redefine the so called healthy regime u undertake.

I offer my deepest condolence to his family, especially, Ms Khoo, his wife to be. This is really unfortunate and i could almost not bear the thought of it.

i guess for the rest of us… the take away is to treasure the time we get to spend with our loved ones. and if you read on… and there is anyone u think of and cant bear to lose… its probably one person you wanna hold on to so so tightly…

The story of Mr Oii

AT 26, Mr Ooi Eu Jin was at the prime of his life. He had so much to look forward to - a good job as an engineer, a loving wife and family, and a wedding next year. And he had attributes most men would envy. He was brainy, a super-fit athlete, motivated, open-minded and a born leader. Yet, in somewhat unusual circumstances, Mr Ooi is now dead. Last Tuesday, he drowned in an indoor swimming pool in Suzhou, China, where he was on a six-month work stint. Unusual because he was a strong swimmer and an avid scuba diver. And also because it is not known what happened exactly. Other swimmers had seen Mr Ooi swim four fast laps before he got out for a while. After he went back in, no one seemed to notice him until a swimmer saw him face down in 1.2m-deep water. Mr Ooi, who has a first-class honours degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from NTU, was about 1.7m tall. His brother, Mr Ooi Joo Jee, 31, told The New Paper: ‘The swimmer thought my brother was practising his diving techniques underwater, so he continued to swim. ‘But after a lap, he noticed my brother was still in the same position. He tapped him, but there was no response.’ The swimmer alerted the two lifeguards on duty. Together with other club members, they administered first aid, but could not resuscitate Mr Ooi. The incident happened around 7.30pm, and no foul play is suspected. His body was flown back on Monday night. At his wake yesterday, family members, including Mr Ooi’s wife of nine months, were still reeling from their loss. Mr Ooi and Ms Debbie Khoo had registered their marriage on Valentine’s Day this year, which was also their ninth anniversary as a couple. They were both in the same ECA group in Nanyang Junior College. A tearful Ms Khoo said: ‘I still wonder how it happened. It was an indoor pool with people around, and only 1.2m deep. ‘We are guessing he probably over-exerted himself and fainted or maybe his heart had stopped and then he drowned.’

WORKED OUT IN GYM Mr Ooi had worked out at the gym before his swim. Ms Khoo, 26, who’s also an engineer, said she last spoke to her husband the night before. ‘He was perfectly fine,’ she said. ‘He said he was training harder so he could carry me on our wedding day.’ Ms Khoo said they had many plans for the future, including holding their customary wedding on 26 Oct next year and running a marathon together. Mr Khoo, a health buff who went to the gym almost everyday, ran his first marathon last year. The couple had also recently booked a build-to-order flat in Punggol, which would be ready in five years’ time. Ms Khoo said her husband was a strong swimmer who swam three times a week. In junior college, he was captain of the canoeing and dragonboat team. Mr Ooi was posted to Suzhou by his company, GE Aviation, more than two months ago for an operations management leadership programme. He joined a fitness club near his apartment a few weeks after arriving. The club has a gym as well as an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool. He worked hard to maintain his physique, said his brother. They have a younger sister. Ms Khoo had accompanied him during his first week in China, and was supposed to visit him again next month. He was excited about being posted overseas and made many friends there, she said. ‘Part of me was not ready to let him go but it was for work and I had to support him,’ Ms Khoo recalled. They kept in touch daily through webcam and e-mail. She added: ‘He cared for me a lot and was always looking out for me. ‘He loved his family a lot and cared for his friends too. He was motivated and dedicated to everything that he did.’ Ms Khoo said her husband was good at expressing himself and liked to talk about his day and experiences with his family. With her, said Ms Khoo, he liked to talk things through if they had any issues. She added: ‘He was an open-minded person. I’m a Catholic, but he never once minded going to church with me.’ She recalled that he had blacked out in his hostel room about three years ago, just as he was about to go out. Mr Ooi bled after falling and hitting his head. He was warded in hospital for two days but tests did not find anything amiss. His father, Mr Ooi Ah Baa, 57, said a staff member from GE’s human resources department had called to inform the family about the tragedy. Shaking his head, Mr Ooi said: ‘I dropped the phone and just started shouting. I couldn’t accept it.’ His wife, he added, had still not come to terms with the death. The family said GE staff gave them help and support when they went to Suzhou. Tests showed that the cause of death was drowning, his father said. The club closed the pool for a day to allow the family to conduct Taoist rites.

BRIGHT FUTURE

The elder Mr Ooi said his son had a bright future. He was the brainy one in his family and had planned to do a master’s degree next year. Mr Ooi said he spoke to his son by webcam two days before he died. ‘Eu Jin appeared normal, and was even showing off his muscles to us.’ His death has affected many of his friends. One of them, Mr Ng Tang Sen, 26, created a blog for them to pay tribute to him. Said Mr Ng: ‘I felt it would be a common place for everyone to remember him and for friends to know more about his life.’ Mr Ng said his buddy of 14 years had many other friends. ‘He was a determined person who studied hard and trained very hard for his races. He was also a born leader,’ said Mr Ng. ‘I would never imagine such a thing happening to him.’ When his family went to his apartment in Suzhou, his GMAT test-prep book was opened on his table. His television and laptop were also on. ‘It looked as if he was coming back soon,’ said Ms Kho0

haven been really blogging for the longest while due to my exams and my recent trip to Guangzhou.
the week that had just passed had been really good! it started with deepavali at the varmans where I get to see my fav boy and girl. Really glad to see that Jah and uncle lau getting along so fine and im so happy that Chars mini op was a great success… so chars… "pain no more ya"
the boy dated me to go for the "save the sea dive" on Saturday and for the first time, I dived in Singapore waters to pick up litter. For those of you that do not know… I have a slight fetish for picking up litter and wats more… in the great ocean I feel for so much. tsk tsk…
visibility was so so and no i have yet to see any seahorse that ive heard so much about in Singapore waters. Back to the save the ocean project… we did not really manage to pick up a great deal but the fact that we tried our best and did our part made the dive really meaningful. In between the dive, we visited p hantu for a while. I saw my fav saga seeds and was reminded me those times me and joey went collecting them. There is a special meaning in those seeds for me that only a few know… anyway, im happy to see them with the alien. i took up a bunch and was happily holding them until alien gave me a hesistant answer abt the seeds and its origin aka hantu island. yes its silly but im silly enuff to leave them behind. he owes me a bundle now!

quote of the year

October 1st, 2007 by gengengen

"Slowly but surely"

i find this a terribly inspiring line, am not sure if you would agree.

a close friend shared this with me a while ago and this had really calm me down and make me more optimistic abt many things in life…

it makes one appreciate the little of what one used to have as compared to old times. it makes one more forward looking… ive been pondering for many days and suddenly realizes that besides applying this quote to a certain aspect of your life… you could almost apply this to every situation you’re in….

"Slowly but surely" :)

post taiwan syndrome!

its been a week since 外星人came back from ROC and we’ve been busy trying to catch up with each other as well as friends and family we’ve not met in a while. Man we were kinda a lil awkward it that two min that we first met when he was at the bus terminal waiting for me. tsk tsk…

we finally warm up and yeah… its great to be back in each other’s embrace again…i must say its been a great week and we’ve manage to do quite a bit.

I was first greeted with lotsa pleasant suprises and goodies from the alien… that i bei pai sei and ask him boldly…. bei when u travelling again huh…

anyway im so so happy to see him again and i think we kinda got even closer in every sense and treasure time spent together more. other key highlights of the week includes….

~the alien losing his phone (ya… not very good timing….)

~ lau and gen turn 4

~ finally making that trip to IKEA to get some boxes for my room….

~us going to the varmans residence and him seeing my fav princess for the first time and us realising that he and my best pal have quite a few common interest.

~the week passed quickly and b4 we know it… its the weekend and we met up with his cousins whom ive not met b4.

~lastly… we finally manage to put our hands together and our first attempt to prep… Penang Char Kuay teow… it was fun… but i must say we need to practise this a lil more… like perhaps 4 times more… the most interesting thing to me was how everyone came together and help prep the dish… and fill in each others shortcomings… of cos we the newbies have alot to learn from lau mama and pa. from the pounding techniques to the opening of the clams… so much so that me and lau agreed that in future… if we dont plan to eat the harm we will not add them… COS THEY ARE DAMN HARD TO OPEN la!

after lunch… we also did the much anticipated great clean up where 黄脸(yellow faced) gen wipe out all the dust that can be found in the space ship…. lalalalala…..

overall… a good weekend…. and a complete one…. lalalalalalla

we already have some new ideas for tis weekend!… lalalalal IM so looking forward…
